MIDRAND – A sophisticated, intelligence-driven police operation has led to the seizure of cocaine with an estimated street value of R20 million and the arrest of a 56-year-old suspect at a smallholding in Midrand.

The breakthrough occurred on the evening of Tuesday, 28 October 2025, when a multidisciplinary team sprang into action. The operation was led by Crime Intelligence Head Office and included the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, SAPS Johannesburg K9 unit, and members of the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC).

The teams were acting on specific information regarding a large consignment of drugs being stored at a plot in the Blue Hills area of Midrand. Further investigation revealed that the cocaine, weighing approximately 80kg, was smuggled into South Africa from a neighbouring country. The intended final destination for the narcotics was the city of Cape Town in the Western Cape.

During a search of the identified property, police discovered the large consignment of cocaine carefully hidden within a storage room.

The 56-year-old man, suspected to be the owner of the plot, was immediately arrested on site. The substantial haul of drugs was seized as evidence.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to make his first appearance before the Midrand Magistrate’s Court later this week. He is facing potential charges of possession of drugs and dealing in drugs.
