On Sunday, August 3, 2025, a 51 year old mother, her 36 year old daughter, and her two sons in their twenties drowned while performing a traditional cleansing ritual at the Delfie Quarry Dam in Pienaarsport, Mamelodi, Gauteng.

A seven year old daughter, who had not participated in the ritual, called the South African Police Service (SAPS) after her family was unable to get out of the water.

Police divers were dispatched to the scene and located the bodies of the mother and daughter floating on the water’s surface on Sunday. The two sons could not be found that day due to the depth of the dam. The next day, Monday, August 4, 2025, police successfully retrieved the bodies of the two missing sons.

The Boschkop police station has opened an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
