MIDRAND, GAUTENG A swift response by the Gauteng Highway Patrol Unit has led to the dismantling of a sophisticated illicit alcohol manufacturing plant in Midrand, culminating in the arrest of a 70 year old father and his 36 year old son. The operation, which took place on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, resulted in the seizure of counterfeit alcohol valued at an estimated R2 million.

The police action was initiated after a concerned member of the public provided a crucial tip-off about suspicious activity at a property in the Midrand area. According to a police spokesperson, the informant’s report detailed unusual movement of people and vehicles, prompting an immediate investigation.

Upon arrival at the property, the Gauteng Highway Patrol Unit members were met with a fully operational clandestine facility. Inside, they found a significant quantity of illicit alcohol, including brandy, gin, rum, and vodka, which was already packaged for distribution. The police noted that some of the bottles were fraudulently branded with the labels of well known alcohol companies, a clear attempt to deceive consumers.

In addition to the finished products, officers also found various chemicals and manufacturing equipment suspected of being used in the illegal distillation process. The scene was meticulously processed with the assistance of members from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks.

A 36 year old man was found at the scene and was immediately taken into custody. The subsequent investigation quickly led police to a second suspect, his 70 year old father, who was also arrested in connection with the operation.

The two suspects are facing serious charges, including dealing in illicit liquor, contravention of the Liquor Act, and contravention of the Customs Act. They are expected to make their first appearance before the Midrand Magistrate Court to answer for the allegations.
